Symbolism: Fish bones have held significance in several different cultures throughout history. The significance of fish symbolism for Jesus Christ in early Christianity cannot be overstated; thus, fish vertebra were often used for prayer beads. Fish were thought to symbolize a variety of attributes, including wisdom (Celts), fertility, good luck, and abundance (Native Americans), adaptability and protection (African nations), and transformation (Ancient Greeks).
The Seafoam Necklace combine aqua glass pearls, aqua-colored mother-of-pearl sticks or “frangia,” and, surprise, surprise, fish vertebra! The necklace is finished with silver-plated chain and findings.
The use of fish vertebra in jewelry goes back to about the 8th or 9th century, when it is believed they were used in rosaries and other prayer beads. The bones used here in the Seafoam design series came from Africa, and are the by-products of fish that were harvested for food. No animals were harmed in order to make this jewelry.
