Symbolism: Fish bones have held significance in several different cultures throughout history. The significance of fish symbolism for Jesus Christ in early Christianity cannot be overstated; thus, fish vertebra were often used for prayer beads. Fish were thought to symbolize a variety of attributes, including wisdom (Celts), fertility, good luck, and abundance (Native Americans), adaptability and protection (African nations), and transformation (Ancient Greeks).
The Seafoam Clip Earrings feature blue-green swirly lucite cabochons, jade-colored crystal pearls, and, just in case this design isn’t ocean-related enough for you, fish vertebra. Yes, you read that right — fish vertebra.
The use of fish vertebra in jewelry goes back to about the 8th or 9th century, when it is believed they were used in rosaries and other prayer beads. The bones used here in the Seafoam design series came from Africa, and are the by-products of fish that were harvested for food. No animals were harmed in order to make this jewelry.
Approximate length (top to bottom): slightly over 2 inches

Cabochon dimensions: 18mm diameter (about 3/4 inch diameter)

All of our clip earrings are made with comfort and style in mind. To minimize discomfort, our clip earrings are constructed with a large focal (usually a gemstone cabochon, intaglio, or cameo) at the front of a clip with a large round pad (at least 13mm in diameter). This construction allows for pressure to be distributed to a wider area of the earlobe, eliminating the “pressure point” discomfort that can often come with screwbacks and smaller clips.
